Saw this posted on my facebook this morning and just had to share. It continually amazes me how many people here on tumblr and elsewhere in the world continue to think the answer to racism is more racism…or that racism against white people is somehow “justified” or “doesn’t count as racism.”
Not only do white people think you’re full of shit, but so do your fellow POC.
Watch the full video here.
Watch the video it is really good.
get outta here, birdie!!
I know this video is a set up, but it’s about time somebody bloody said it. I’m sick of people trying to fight fire with fire and trying to justify it because “you can’t oppress the oppressor”. There HAS to be better ways of going about it.
all credit to that lovely lady for standing up against some ignorant shit, but this whole scenario is not an example of racism. discrimination, yes. racism, no.
it’s not that “racism against white people doesn’t count as racism”, but that racism against white people doesn’t exist.
discrimination is not racism. just because white people and POC can both discriminate against each other, that doesn’t mean “reverse racism” is possible. for one, POC don’t have a system of institutionalised racism to back them up whenever they feel like discriminating against white people.
whiteness is the norm. white people are constantly represented everywhere you look in a positive way. white people are not memes. white people are not sold as halloween costumes.
if a white person experiences discrimination it’s understandable that they’d be upset (duh, everyone has feelings etc etc). however, it’s NOT the same as the racism POC experience every day.
there’s a difference. having your feelings hurt is not the same as being subject to police brutality, experiencing racism in the workplace, being arrested for stealing expensive clothes you just bought, or being shot in the head.
when white people talk about “reverse racism”, they’re talking about being discriminated against and denied their usual privilege, being made to feel uncomfortable, having their feelings hurt.
when POC talk about racism they’re talking about experiencing discrimination and being denied their rights as human beings.
